Abstract

The increasing of social network sites access coincides with increasing of beauty pageant
in Indonesia has been boosting the birth of pageant portals on instagram. This article aims
to describe linguistic features used by both male and female in asynchronous computermediated

communication on a pageant portal on instagram. Qualitative method through
using Computer-Mediated Discourse approach was applied in this study. This study found
that the commenter used three kinds of user name namely male user name, female user
name, and neutral user name. Moreover it was found that male pageant lovers post longer
comments that female pageant lovers did, mostly used crude languages including insult
and profanity mainly to male beauty pageant title holder, asserted opinion strongly as facts,
manifest adversarial orientation toward their interlocutors and begin and close discussion
on pageant portal. Meanwhile female pageant lovers tend to post shorter comments, used
assertion, apologize, and express support to others, and manifest aligned orientation toward
their interlocutors.
